Early this morning, Mozilla Labs said it has released a prototype conversation aggregator and Web 2.0
communications platform for its Firefox browser, MAC's OS X Safari and Google Chrome Internet users.
Mozilla added that it hopes the prototype would explore new ways to use Linux and open web technologies
to create useful practical Internet messaging experiences.
Mozilla's new application allows Internet users to take conversations from e-mail, Twitter, various blogs
and other Web 2.0 networking sites.
The experimental open source tool (which snubs Microsoft’s Internet Explorer) has been called “Raindrop”.
“For its part, Raindrop uses a small web server with a tiny footprint to get your conversations from
different sources (email, twitter, RSS feeds, etc.)
It simply pulls out the important parts and allows the user to interact with the information using modern
web browsers such as Firefox, Safari or Chrome.
Linux and open source developers what would be interested in writing Mozilla extensions that use standard
open web technologies such as HTML, JavaScript and CSS can also contribute to this new initiative.
“Various notifications from computers and mailing lists should be organized for you, not clutter your inbox
or require a complicated manual filter setup. It should be easy to smoothly integrate new Internet services into
your conversation viewer entirely using open web technologies.”
With this, Mozilla hopes to build a one-stop-shop communications platform that allows Internet users to
have a single point of entry for messages and various personal data.
“When a friend’s link from YouTube or Flickr comes in, your messaging client should be able to show the
video or photos near or as part of the message, rather than rudely kicking you over to a separate browser
tab,” said a Mozilla spokesperson.
