Oct. 14, 2009

Late yesterday, hardware designer and motherboard maker Kontron Inc. has announced a fanless, Mini-ITX-based personal computer that fully supports Intel Celeron or Intel Core Two Duo™ processors. At just 37 Watts of power consumption, the Concept 751 PC is one of the least power-hungry PC ever made.

The Kontron Concept 751 PC offers no less than 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports, 6 USB 2.0 ports, 4 serial ports, a 2.5-inch hard drive bay and an IEEE-1394-compliant Firewire port, says Kontron.

Kontron's new Concept Box 751 is designed for challenging industrial environments, as well as medical, transportation, or digital signage applications, the company said. The 2.9 x 9.8 x 10.2 automation PC is the first of Kontron's Concept Box embedded computers to be based on a standard product.

The company added that its Concept Box 751 comes with the 986LCD-M/mITX motherboard, up to 4 GB of DDR2 memory, and a choice of CPUs: either a 1.06 GHz Intel Celeron or a 1.66 GHz Intel Core Two Duo processor. A 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive and a CompactFlash socket are provided for storage and a PCI Express slot is available for future expansion.

To save on weight and to cut down on internal heat generation, the new PC is powered by a 24 VDC external power supply. As stated above, the computer's maximum power consumption is rated at only 37 Watts.

The Concept Box 751 offers shock and vibration resistance, as well as operating temperature support between 0 and 50 degrees C. The PC is said to offer a MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) rating of 40,000 hours.

Assembly options are available for vertical, horizontal and rack mounting, says Kontron. The company didn't specify however if it would be housed in a 1U, 2U or other standard form factor An email sent to the company is still unanswered.

Overall specifications listed for the Concept 751 include:
