Microsoft has opened a new Open Source Interop Tech Center near Munich, Germany.
The new technology center is aimed at promoting open source software on the Windows operating system and
to improve the relationship of its products with the free software community.
The first few months of activities of the new entity near Munich are dedicated primarily in working on
support for the PHP scripting language on Windows.
In addition, the center is putting efforts into the Interoperability initiative of the OSBF (Open Source
Business Foundation), the European open source network located in Nuremberg that also includes Red Hat and
Novell among its members.
Leadership of the Interop Technology Center will be under Andreas Urban, who has the new position of Manager
of Open Source Strategy at Microsoft.
Responsible for coordinating the PHP work and communicating it to the PHP community is Pierre Joye at Microsoft's
Open Source Technology Center in Redmond, WA.
Overall, and for the past two to three years, Microsoft has started to fully recognize the growing importance
of the open source model and is acting in that direction. It's new technology center in Munich is proof
of this.
