Momentum behind the Open Document Format is building rapidly.

The Open Document Format (ODF) has become a popular format that offers many advantages to its users.

It uses open standards that have achieved growing popularity and support and in a variety of software products.

It brings to an end the era of closed (read: proprietary) formats that have kept users tied to a single vendor’s products.

Now the ODF Alliance is offering awards to Linux developers and the open source community as a whole to individuals or to groups of individuals that have helped its cause in a good way.

The purpose of the awards is to recognize the contribution of their work and in promoting ODF adoption, the mission of the ODF Alliance.

Here’s how you can help...

Nominate an individual or entity you work with closely or someone you have observed who stands out as a leader in the ODF community. This may be an individual who has successfully mobilized grassroots activity in support of ODF, etc.

Or it can be a government official who in the face of resistance to change, has successfully managed to break down the barriers to public access to information, improved eGov services, and saved taxpayer money in the process.

Or it can be a non-profit organization that raised awareness about document freedom by hosting speakers, events and has managed to spread the word about the importance of open documents.

The awards aren't just restricted to ODF advancement in government, and can include other categories, for example, ODF advancement in education, community or rural development.

In your nomination, please be sure to include:

  • The name of the person or entity
  • Their e-mail address
  • A brief description of this person or entity’s actions
  • The reasons why you are nominating that person or entity
  • Nominations are to be sent to mmarcich@odfalliance.org no later than Oct. 8, 2008.

The ODF Alliance and its affiliated national chapters are not eligible for nomination.

Winners of the awards will be announced at upcoming national or local ODF events.
