Today, Sun Microsystems has released StarOffice 9, its own version of the popular open source office
suite software.
In addition to the usual core applications included with OpenOffice.org, StarOffice 9 also bundles Mozilla’s
Thunderbird for email and calendaring support.
With exactly the same binaries as OpenOffice.org 3.0, Sun's new StarOffice 9 includes a native version for
Mac OS X for the first time as well as versions for Windows, Linux and (of course...) Solaris.
StarOffice version 9 and StarSuite 9 (the Asian language edition) are both available for download from
http://www.sun.com/download/.
Sun’s Jim Parkinson said “with the new features in version 9, now businesses get an open standards-based,
enterprise-class office productivity suite that is fully compatible with Microsoft Office but costs significantly
less."
Parkinson added "with its ability to read Microsoft Office Open XML files, support for MS Access 2007 files and
improved VBA macro support, StarOffice 9 is a great option for companies looking to reduce their IT costs in these
tough economic times.”
The new StarOffice subscription model includes licence and support, and is readily available in one and
three-year terms and customers can choose between standard or premium support.
It will be interesting to see how the Linux and open source community welcomes this new version. We
will keep you posted.
