The FreeBSD engineering team has released its new 7.2 version of its Linux operating system. This is the second
release from the 7 series which improves on the features of FreeBSD 7.1.
Here are some of the highlights of the new 7.2 release:
Support for both IPv4 and IPv6
Support for the transparent use of superpages for application memory
CSUP (v. 1) now supports CVS Mode to fetch a full CVS repository
Gnome has been updated to version 2.26 and KDE was updated to 4.2.2
SPARC 64 now supports the faster Ultra Sparc-III processors and CPUs
Users of earlier FreeBSD releases (FreeBSD 6.x) can also use FreeBSD Update to upgrade to FreeBSD 7.2, but
will be prompted to rebuild all third-party applications (e.g., anything installed from the ports tree) after
the second invocation of "freebsd-update install", in order to handle differences in the system libraries between
FreeBSD 6.x and FreeBSD 7.x.
For a full list of all the new features and known bugs, please see the online release notes and errata list,
available at:
http://www.FreeBSD.org/releases/7.2R/relnotes.html.
The new release of FreeBSD version 7.2 is now available for the AMD 64, i386, IA 64, PC 98, Power PC and SPARC
64 architectures.
As always, FreeBSD 7.2 can be installed from bootable ISO images or over a network.
The required files can be downloaded via FTP or BitTorrent as described on the FreeBSD website. While some of the smaller FTP
mirrors may not carry all architectures, they will all generally contain the more common ones, such as i386
and amd64.
Note:- Late in the testing cycle, it was later discovered that some servers may not recognize the i386 Disc
1 as bootable-- they just fall through to booting off the next boot device. All affected computers and servers
however did see the other discs as bootable.
The new release of FreeBSD 7.2 can also be purchased on CD-ROM or DVD from several BSD vendors.
The FreeBSD-update utility supports binary upgrades of i386 and AMD 64 systems running earlier FreeBSD releases.
Systems running the 7.0 version, the 7.1 and 7.2 (beta) can upgrade as they wish.
During the FreeBSD upgrade to the R 7.2 release, users may merge some configuration files or by confirming that
the automatically performed merging was done correctly.
