May 15, 2008

Late yesterday, the Red Hat Fedora Project Initiative released version 9 of its Fedora Linux operating system (O.S.)

This is an upgrade of its open source O.S. with support for live USB bootup, Open JDK-6, KDE 4 and the ext4 Linux file system. Paul Frields, Fedora’s new project leader says that the project's initial name was code-named Sulphur, Fedora's new version 9 and was developed by a little more than 2,050 volunteer software developers from all over the world.

Fedora 9 now offers a variety of functional improvements, ranging from a “surgery free facelift” to live USB with persistence, which turns any USB key into a bootable, portable Fedora OS users can take anywhere and use on any system that boots with a standard USB.

Red Hat's Fedora 9 Project also incorporates an enhanced Anaconda Installer and another feature called Package-Kit that greatly simplifies the management of security patches and various updates and integrates well with existing package management systems.

Fedora 9 is also the first Linux OS to fully implement the KDE 4 desktop as well as Gnome 2.22, according to Fedora's leaders.

Although some Linux distributions ('Linux distros') use Gnome as the primary open source desktop, KDE continues to receive good support from Red Hat’s Linux community, and from the Novell-sponsored Open-SUSE Project.

OpenSUSE version 11, which is now in beta testing and due to ship on June 19, also offers KDE 4 and GNOME 2.22. It will also offer a single CD install, enhanced updating stack and a slimmed down installation.

The Fedora 9 Project also offers an improved Network Manager with better support for static IP addressing, mobile broadband and multiple connections & connection sharing.

As of May 14, Red Hat said its Fedora project now has more than two million copies of Fedora 9 that have been successfully downloaded and installed.
