Why Linux is a great alternative to Windows

There are many reasons why Linux is a great alternative to Windows.

Overall, desktop Linux is soon expected to gain ground and there are a few reasons why this is so. One of them is Microsft's decision to soon dump Windows XP. Ant it gets worse. Microsoft also said last week it will also drop Vista in about a year-and-a-half as well.

These developments are expected to convince some Windows users that there is a better way. For starters, desktop Linux doesn't lock users into a single vendor. Today, you can select from Red Hat Linux, Ubuntu, CentOS, Free BSD, Fedora, Suse, Gentoo, and a few more.

With desktop Linux you will always be able to use the version of the operating system you want to use. For users that still like and are used to work with Red Hat 9, they can still download a fresh copy of it from Red Hat's website. And the same is true of all other 'Linux flavors'.

So which version of Linux to use? Anyone who can use Windows XP can run modern Linux distributions like Ubuntu 8.04, Fedora 9 and even Open Suse 11.

With distributions like Xandros, which you'll find on the popular Asus Eee line of inexpensive computers, any one who has ever used Windows may be hard put to tell they're not running Windows.

There are also other distributions such as gOS, that any reasonably bright elementary school student can use...

Today, desktop Linux is available from top OEMs such as Dell, Lenovo and Asus. You don't need to install anything. You just buy it, turn it on, and use it. It's simply 'plug and play' as you'd expect any well-engineered product to stand on its own.

There are many in the Linux community which think that Microsoft is telling its desktop customers, old and new, to just jump in the lake, until eighteen months from now anyway.

This gives people time to give desktop Linux a real good try, no matter the 'flavor' they decide to try.
