Developments in the Linux Mobile segment continue to happen at a very furious pace, as news keep
pouring in every day. On Thursday, MontaVista announced that its MobiLinux 5.0 distribution for mobile
devices has been optimized for the Freescale i.MX31 system-on-chip (SoC).
This important new development brings the total number of Freescale processors supported by MontaVista
distributions to 10, the company said in a statement.
Just a few days ago, Freescale also announced an i.MX31 development kit that includes a Linux BSP (board
support package), CPU module, a peripherals module and a hardware debugger to help developers build mobile
applications faster and with improved functionality.
Additionally, Freescale recently announced a successor to the i.MX31, the i.MX37. The i.MX-37 is the
company's first chip based on an ARM-1176JZF-S core.
The ARM-11-based i.MX31 first shipped three years ago and is embedded in a variety of devices for
the consumer, automotive, industrial and general embedded markets.
The multimedia-capable applications processor is clockable from 532MHz to 665MHz, and is popular for its
very low power consumption.
Jim Ready, founder and CTO of MontaVista said "we recognize the wide market application of Freescale's i.MX31
multimedia applications processor, which includes an array of mobile devices."
Like other MontaVista offerings for vertical markets, MobiLinux is based on MontaVista Linux Professional
Edition and specifically designed for use with MontaVista's Eclipse-based Dev-Rocket toolsuite.
Unveiled in October 2007, Mobilinux 5.0 is positioned as smaller, lighter and more real-time capable than the
Pro version, with sub-50 microsecond latency and footprints as small as 3 MB.
MontaVista began offering i.MX support more than four years ago and looks to the future with optimism.
MontaVista MobiLinux 5.0 for the Freescale i.MX31 is available today, says the company. Pricing wasn't
immediately disclosed however.
