Google Gears now works with Ubuntu 8.

June 19, 2008

According to various reports from observers in the Linux community, Google Gears now works with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, which began its life in February with the then-non-Gears-supported Firefox 3 in beta.

The improvement was made last Wednesday, but there are some that don't think the Gears link worked for Linux systems with Firefox 3 that day.

In the past few days, some in the Linux community have tried Google Docs with Gears on Firefox 2 and they were apparently impressed. Editing of existing Docs files was seamless, and while some still miss the ability to create new files in Google Docs while offline, it is hoped that Google will add some functionality to its Docs/Gears apps.

Expect Google's Gears to install in the latest Firefox browser. Here's a bit more on Google Gears:

Google Gears is what is called an API (Application Programming Interface), and it installs as a Firefox plug in. If you don't have a live Internet connection, Gears detects this and uses a SQL-Lite database set up in the user's Firefox directory to allow the ability to read and edit files in Google Docs.

Some have tried it and liked it. When Gears is first installed, the database is created and populated with all the user's Google Docs files, after which Gears attempts at the earliest opportunity to sync that database with the files on the online version of Google Docs.

Some in the Linux community may have found a way to get around Google Docs/Gears' inability to create new documents while disconnected from the Internet. (Story to be updated in a week)
