Vietnamese PC maker offers new Linux netbook

Jul. 22, 2009

Vietnamese PC manufacturer Hacao offers a new Netbook, along with a new bilingual (English and Vietnamese language) release of its Hacao Linux 2009 distribution.

The new Hacao Netbook is based on an Intel Atom-based MSI Wind CPU and offers a 10-inch screen and up to 160 Gb of hard drive storage capacity. It also features up to 1 Gig of RAM.

Hacao's new Netbook is a branded version of the Pico netbook from Singapore-based Axioo, which is in turn a modified, Bluetooth-less version of the MSI Wind. Both run on Linux.

Two years ago, Hacao introduced a Vietnamese-localized version of the Intel Classmate PC educational mini-laptop, making it one of the earliest netbooks on the market.

Like the Classmate PC, the pre-Atomic age Hacao Classmate PC was based on a 900 Mhz Celeron CPU and featured a small 7-inch LCD display. It was adopted by the Vietnamese government for use in Vietnam's schools, along with the company's Hacao Linux distribution.

The new Hacao Netbook has a broader focus than the Hacao Classmate PC, with Hacao citing business and consumer use in additional to educational applications. The company hasn't made too many changes from the Pico, the 1.6 Ghz Intel Atom processor is presumably the N-270 model.

The Hacao Netbook also offers Wi-Fi connectivity, an Ethernet port and a camera.

Other standard features of the Axioo Pico include three USB ports, a flash memory card reader, and a dial-up modem. The biggest difference is the price. Whereas the the Pico sells for over $500, the Hacao Linux Netbook is available for only US $240.

The Hacao Linux 2009 CE is billed as a major upgrade to the Hacao 4.21 Pro. Like the Hacao Linux 2.01 version released in 2006, Hacao Linux 2009 CE is based on Puppy Linux, but at 320 Mb, it offers more storage capacity.

It also features a one-click switch between the Vietnamese and English language. Full unicode support is offered for applications including OpenOffice (with spell-checker), Skype video, Yahoo Chat, Gimp, Wine and Stardict.

Additional features of the Hacao Linux 2009 CE include easy connections to Windows networking, improved support for Wi-Fi, as well as enhanced web browsing, chat and video calling features.

The Hacao Netbook is available now for US $240. The 320 Mb Hacao Linux 2009 OS is available for free download at any Puppy Linux mirror site, which requires the username "puppy" and the password "linux" for entry.
