Jul. 6, 2009

Cisco is officially announcing the launch of a new Linux powered Wireless-N broadband router with storage link and media sharing functionality, the Linksys WRT-160-NL.

The new 802.11n version 2.0 router includes dual antennas with R-SMA connectors, a 400Mhz processor, 8 MB of Flash memory, 32 MB of D-DRAM and a USB 2.0 port for connecting external storage devices to be played back over the network.

"In the past, we have had many successful Linux powered devices. The WRT-160-NL router is the logical next step combining Linux, 802.11n technology and USB storage functionality," says Aaron Marinari, senior product manager for Cisco's Consumer Business Group.

The new WRT-160-NL router will retail for $119 and should be available from authorized Linksys retailers, resellers and VAR partners soon.

As the new Linksys router is fully Linux-based, it should only be a matter of time before users start modifying the source code and adding additional features and functionality to the unit, such as BitTorrent downloaders.

The current firmware that ships with the unit and its source code is available for download from the Linksys support page.

Ed note. Some industry observers in the Linux community think that more manufacturers such as Juniper and a few others might follow suit and start offering similar routers that will run on Linux as well.

It will be interesting to see this new trend develop and watch where this will take us.
