BIND version 10 to be available in the next few months

April 24, 2009

The ISC (Internet Systems Consortium) has announced that it has received enough support from Linux sponsors to launch the BIND version 10 project, in creating a replacement DNS server for BIND 9.

The older BIND 9 version began its development more than ten years ago and is the most widely used DNS server software on the Web.

The ISC wants to completely redevelop its DNS server software for the Internet's domain name system.

BIND 10 aims to incorporate current security techniques, such as DNS-SEC, while being constructed as a modular system, so that it can work as a simple domain resolver for small LANs, or a full authoritative server for top level domains.

Another possibility is the development of the MySQL database server connectivity as a module.

The development phase for BIND 10 may not be completed until as late as 2014. Other registries participating in the project are AFNIC (France), CIRA (Canada), JPRS (Japan) and SIDN (Netherlands).

Another focus for the BIND development process will be the robustness of the new software implementation.

BIND 10 developers want to replace BIND 9's earlier response to some errors, for example when logging and exiting, which has the potential to be exploited for DoS (Denial of Service attacks).

With the new implementation, BIND 10 should be able to reset itself and continue its normal operation.

BIND 10 developers are also looking at being able to integrate BIND into back end systems as well, a closer coupling with DHCP servers and additional support for clustering servers.
